چکیده

Electronic fetal monitoring is commonly used during labour to detect fetuses at risk of hypoxia and acidaemia, Interpretation is based on subjective assessment and informed by guidance from the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics and, in the UK, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. A Cochrane review provides clear evidence that neonatal seizures are less common when labour is monitored continuously rather than with intermittent auscultation. Such seizures, which most commonly result from a lack of blood flow and oxygen to the brain (neonatal or hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy), 3 occur in around 1.8-3.5/1000 live births and are associated with a range of long term motor and cognitive sequelae. These affect not only the function and educational attainment of the child but also their carers and those funding services to support them.

A study of an intelligent system to support decision making in the management of labour using the cardiotocograph – the INFANT study protocol

BACKGROUND Continuous electronic fetal heart rate monitoring in labour is widely used but its potential for improving fetal and neonatal outcomes has not been realised. The most likely reason is the difficulty of interpreting the fetal heart rate trace correctly during labour. Computerised interpretation of the fetal heart rate and intelligent decision-support has the potential to deliver this ...

Neonatal Outcomes with Continuous Intrapartum Electronic Fetal Monitoring vs. Intermittent Auscultation

This study was undertaken to observe how the EFM alters the neonatal outcome as compared to IA. The present study was conducted in Maheshwari Children‟s Hospital and associated obstetric centers, Bathinda, India. This study included 990 women, pregnant with single live fetus, who were monitored during the labour either by intermittent auscultation (IA) or electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) by ca...

Professionals’ views of fetal monitoring during labour: a systematic review and thematic analysis

BACKGROUND Current recommendations do not support the use of continuous electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) for low risk women during labour, yet EFM remains widespread in clinical practice. Fetal electrocardiogram (ECG) for fetal monitoring during labour.

BACKGROUND Animal and human studies have shown that fetal hypoxaemia during labour can alter the shape of the fetal electrocardiogram (ECG) waveform, notably (1) the relation of the PR to RR intervals and (2) elevation or depression of the ST segment. Technical systems have therefore been developed to monitor the fetal ECG during labour as an adjunct to continuous electronic fetal heart rate mo...
